Between spending five hours a day in the gym during the school year and nine hours a day during the summer, waking up sore and aching was the norm. But if there’s one thing that my early fitness foundations imparted on me, it was a mental toughness that carried me throughout many other paths in my life. Between my days as a gymnast and where I am now, I coached, I did choreography, I largely stepped back from the role of an athlete and into that of an instructor.

Leaving the sporting world was the first time in my life I allowed myself to be lazy, and it’s true that it’s difficult to get motivation back. When I consciously decided to make my way back into the fitness realm, I tried it all. Zumba, yoga, boxing, hiking, etc., nothing seemed to challenge or stimulate me in the way that gymnastics had, that is until I found CrossFit. CrossFit gave me the motivation and structure to get back into fitness, while constantly challenging me mentally to surpass my perceived boundaries (there’s a reason why many CEOs cite this as a key to their success). It awakened my love of power lifting, as well as forcing me to constantly work on and address all aspects of fitness (be that cardio, endurance, strength, flexibility, stamina, the list goes on).

While fitness was more so a requirement growing up, I can now say without hesitation that it is the most life-changing journey you’ll ever take. The community that the fitness world provides, in terms of support and friendship, along with the numerous benefits mentally, physically, emotionally, I can’t speak highly enough of the rewards you’ll reap when you make the choice to get moving and improve your overall health.

While I won’t be the one to tell you the joys of running (you won’t find me signing up for a marathon anytime soon), if you want to talk about the best technique for doing a clean and jerk, or learn how to do a handstand walk down the street, or explore what work outs best suit you, your motivations, and your lifestyle, come and find me! And remember, no matter how hard that fifteen minutes of a concentrated work out may be, you’ll be fine right after, so give it your all!
