Event Details

Join us for an afternoon of delicious food, a great workout, and a fun-filled competition. Never played hooverball before? That’s OK, we’ll teach you how to play. It’s easy to learn, a lot of fun, and an excellent workout.

  • September 19, 2021 (Sunday) from 10AM-2PM
  • Children of all ages are welcome.  All children under 18 years must be registered by an adult.  You’ll be asked to sign a liability waiver that will be emailed to you on checkout.  Please sign it, and email it back to Sand and Steel Fitness.  Once we receive the form, we’ll add your child to the event.
  • Dogs Welcome — there is a dog park and plenty of shade.  Please bring water for them.
  • Friends and guests — welcome.  Please have them order their own ticket.  This makes it much easier for us match people to reservations and waivers.

Two Ticket Choices

  • Event Ticket and Costco.  Sand & Steel will place a larger order for BBQ-type foods from Costco.  If you select the Event Ticket and Costco item, we’ll use $20 dollars of that money towards the Costco order we’ll make for everyone.
  • Event Ticket and Potluck.  If you’d rather cook or buy the food yourself and bring it to the BBQ, that’s cool too.  After you checkout, you’ll be provided with access to a google spreadsheet.  Please indicate which item(s) you’ll be bringing and how many.  We are expecting 20-40 people to register.

Why is there a Ticket Fee?

Reserving an Alexandria Park costs about $200, the ticket fee is used to offset some of those costs.

BBQ Stuff We Need

We need someone(s) to bring:

  • Grilling Equipment (like grill scrapers, grill tongs, grill forks, etc.)
  • Lighter Fluid and BBQ Briquettes

Do you have one or more of these items?  Please add yourself to the Google Sheet.  You’ll get access to the google spreadsheet once you checkout

Extra Lawn Games – Nice To Have Games

Do you have one or more of these games?  Bring it!  Please add yourself to the Google Sheet.  You’ll get access to the google spreadsheet once you checkout

The Park & BBQ

The park features a full-size charcoal BBQ — great for cooking burgers, chicken, hot dogs, corn, etc.

Benn Brenman Park: 4800 Brenman Park Dr, Alexandria, VA 22304.  We have reserved covered and open seating and tables, etc.  This Alexandria park is less than a mile from the gym.  We do not have an alcohol permit, so no beer or wine is permitted.

Hooverball Rules

Hooverball is a super fun game that involves throwing a 6 mini medball back and forth on a volleyball court.  It’s very simple to learn and a challenging workout at the same time.

  • Teams consist of 2-4 players.
  • Scoring is exactly like tennis: love-15-30-40-(deuce, ad-in, ad-out)-game.  First to 6 wins.
  • Points are scored when a team: fails to catch the return, fails to return the ball across the net, returns the ball out of bounds, fails to return the ball to the proper court area.
  • The ball is served from the back line.
  • The serve is rotated among one team until the game is won. Teams alternate serving after each game. Teams switch after every two games.
  • The ball must be caught on the fly and immediately returned from the point it was caught. There is no running with the ball or passing to teammates.
  • Each team’s court is divided in half. A ball caught in the front half of your court must be returned to the back half of your opponent’s court. This prevents spiking. If the ball doesn’t reach the back court, the opponent is awarded the point. Balls caught must be played. The mid-court line is part of the front court.
  • A ball that hits the out-of-bounds line is a good return.
  • A player who catches the ball out-of-bounds, or is carried out-of-bounds by the force of the ball, may return in-bounds before the return.
  • A ball that hits the net on its way over is a live ball. (If it was thrown from the front court, it must reach the opponents back court to be good)
  • Teams may substitute freely at dead ball situations.
  • Good sportsmanship is required. Points in question should be played over.

Special Rules for Women

  • Women serve from the mid-court line.
  • Women may pass once before a return.
  • Women may return the ball to any area of the opponent’s court.
