Paul and Dawn are Both Very Talented

    Tracy K

I look forward to my sessions every week. Paul and Dawn are both very talented and lead challenging and fun sessions. I’m never bored at Sand and Steel, which is quite an accomplishment for S&S, because I get bored easily. Lots of fun equipment, great members make it even more enjoyable, quick results.”

I Lost 10 Pounds of Fat!

    Brad B

This is not your run-of-the-mill fitness center where members read magazines while slow peddling on recumbent bikes or watch TV while jogging on a treadmill. I know this because prior to Sand & Steel, my workout routine pretty much consisted of those two activities: slow jogging and stationary bikes. I wasn’t getting any results, and my doctor told me to lose 10-15 pounds. I needed a different workout and nutrition plan.

I found Sand & Steel while walking to the local pizza shop in Alexandria. After meeting Paul, the co-founder of S&S, i was immediately impressed with his knowledge and background. And, the equipment in the gym is state-of-the-art with many different machines that i’ve never seen before (e.g. jacob’s ladder, a torturous climbing machine – great workout though). I signed-up for a monthly package, which included a body assessment, nutrition plan, and personal training. As expected, my body fat percentage was >20%, and I was frankly shocked to see on paper just how much body fat, in terms of pounds, was on my body (the assessment report is very thorough). Working with Paul, we devised a nutrition plan that worked for me including increasing my caloric intake in the morning, sorting through viable lunch options at my “hot” spots (Panera Bread, Cosi, and Chipotle) and having a sensible dinner. I bought into the new plan and came home with a bunch of nutrition supplements; my wife thought I was crazy.

The workouts are short but intense. A workout may consist of only 3-5 exercises but everything is timed and you’re pushed to failure. I had never trained in cross-fit type exercises so this concept was new to me. Paul and Dawn will teach you the moves and are very patient, making sure everything is safe and will carefully build upon the exercises as you progress. I don’t have a lot of free time and what I found is that you can get an unbelievable workout in 25-35 minutes, or the same amount of time that I used to slow jog on the treadmill. I work out 3 days a week at the gym.

I just completed my 6 week assessment and results are amazing: my body fat % decreased by almost 30% (under 20% of total body fat), and I lost 10 pounds of pure fat! I knew the plan was working as I dropped a belt size, and my wife said I looked thinner and more muscular. In addition to the fat loss, I gained 6-7 pounds in muscle, which I thought was impossible in such a short amount of time.

This is the first review i’ve ever written on google. If you buy into the plan, workouts and nutrition, you will definitely see results. Looking forward to the next 6 weeks and reporting back!

Determined to Meet Their Client's Goals

    Jared A.

I have workout with Paul and Josef for the last four months because my normal workout routines became very lack luster and I really wasn’t seeing the gains that I wanted. I knew I needed professionals who would show me what I was doing wrong, make changes, provide advice on my nutrition, and then be able to see results. After meeting with several other personal trainers I decided to go with Sand and Steel because they weren’t some corporate cookie cutter style gym. Paul, Dawn, Josef and the others are very invested in the business and our determined to meet their clients’ desired goals. Paul gave me a nice break down about Sand and Steels overall fitness philosophy, nutrition, and how they apply that to their clients. He asked a regular client if I could join in on a personal training session so I could see that philosophy in action. After getting a nice beat down from Paul’s workout I knew I had I found my place.

I worked with Paul for the first month constantly getting my butt handed to me on a regular basis. Following the first month of Paul’s killer workouts, his evil stopwatch, and developing a solid foundation I started to work with Josef. He and Paul identified that my previous workout routines were too fast paced and that I was not giving myself enough time between sets to actually add muscle based on my body structure and metabolism. Paul also identified that while I was eating healthy I wasn’t close to eating the amount I needed to put on muscle.

Hearing my goals, Josef designed workout routines specifically to help me meet my goals and completely changed the way I look at working out. After a month of working out twice a week with Josef I added 3lbs of muscle and dropped my body fat. Josef explained the workout benefits to me each session, highlighting how each movement balances out with the other movements. He insured I took the longer rest periods between my sets and provided excellent follow on stretches. Josef made sure my competitive nature didn’t led to any injures. He frequently reminded me to take breaks even during a set that the quality of the rep was a lot more beneficial than the number of reps. Yet he knew when to encourage my competitiveness to drive me to reach my goals, especially during the benchmark sessions. Josef provided a lot of nutritional information and suggestions in particularly how to replace cauliflower for mashed potatoes or rice, which is amazing once you try it. Even my 10 month old son loves it which is a blessing for my wife and I. Having to leave the area for work, Josef provided me all the routines so I could continue to use the workouts to progress.

If you are looking for a gym/personal trainers that are extremely professional, will invest in your goals and not your wallet, will help you meet those goals, and increase your knowledge of fitness and nutrition then you want to go to Sand and Steel. The four months I have been there I increased my knowledge exponentially, and found how to meet my fitness goals.

Bottom Line: Give Sand and Steel a Try--You Won't be Disappointed!

    Kelly Y.

After almost six months of training at Sand and Steel Fitness, I thought I should give an update to my previous review of Sand and Steel. I’m happy to report that after all this time, my wife and I are still thrilled with the staff and facility at Sand and Steel! We are still training three days a week and are ecstatic about our increases in strength and agility, as well as in our overall fitness and health. We’ve been fortunate enough to work with a number of the trainers on staff at Sand and Steel, but most often we train with Max and Rachel, who are both excellent coaches. I also have to say that even with the increase in clients, we’ve seen no degrade in the quality of instruction or personalized attention that initially sold us on Sand and Steel. Moreover, Paul, the owner, is working diligently to build a community of clients who are interested in leading a healthy lifestyle and socializing with like-minded folks. He routinely sends out invitations to social events, training sessions, and other programs of interest to the gym’s patrons.

Ultimately, the best measure of our happiness is our willingness to give them more of our hard-earned money–we’ve bought two additional 25-session packs of personal training and plan to keep buying them moving forward. Visit the gym, talk to the coaches, and let them design a program that works for you. Bottom line: give Sand and Steel a try–you won’t be disappointed!

Excellent Training Reverses the Aging Process

    Mary R.

I continue to receive excellent personal training at Sand and Steel Fitness. When visiting my Daughter at graduate school last weekend she commented ” Mom you look even better than before, what are you doing differently?” I shared my secret weapon-Sand and Steel Training and promised her a session next time she visits. I guess excellent fitness training does reverse the aging process. Thank you Sand and Steel Fitness.

All Around the Best Trainers in DC

Trainers that are actually worth the money! I started doing personal training sessions at S&S about 7 weeks ago and love it! I was a personal trainer myself ages ago and I’m hyper critical of others as a result. Paul at Sand and Steel (and Rachel, Max,…) are amazing! These aren’t trainers that got their certification through some one weekend class but instead continuously enhance their knowledge and know their stuff! Paul is amazing with the nutrition feedback as well.l (and adapting exercises for all sorts of injuries/limitations you may have). These are the first personal trainers I feel are worth the money (and time to get there).

Every single trainer I work with is great.

    Aaron Bush

A few months ago I walked into Sand & Steel with an unhealthy lifestyle, old injuries slowing me down, and a ton of ignorance. Thanks to the entire team I am now a better eater plus more mobile, fit, and knowledgeable. Paul is the mastermind behind my fitness, nutrition, and mobility training — and, honestly, my progress speaks for itself. Sand & Steel has a wide array of programs tackling different goals; both I’ve tried get the job done. Each session I attend is valuable, and every single trainer I work with is great.
I was initially slow to try personal training, but in hindsight I’m thrilled I made the decision to work out here. I’m better off for it and don’t see how other places could top this. Keep up the good work!

I Felt Much Younger and Quality of Life Was Far Better

    Sean K.

Fifteen years following a vicious car accident, in which I sustained multiple fractures in both of my legs and suffered herniated discs in my lower back, I had reached a point of desperation. At just over 300 lbs with high blood sugar and high blood pressure, I was desperate to improve my life. I finally bit the financial bullet by joining a gym and hired a personal trainer. Was not able to find stability with any one trainer after a year of rotating through several. Finally, I was paired with Paul Roberts. To say that he is a perfect fit for me is an understatement. He gradually whipped me into better shape through a combination of core exercises, aerobic exercises, and weight training. Paul’s style for me stressed muscle confusion and diet improvement. After one year of working with Paul, I dropped 20 lbs, gained muscle, stamina, and improved my balance. Combined with an improved diet I lowered my blood sugar and blood pressure. At the end of the second year I had dropped 40 pounds and felt lighter, faster, stronger, dexterous, and flexible.

So why did I achieve the positive results with Paul that I could not achieve with the NINE other trainers? In a two words: attitude and commitment. Paul has a winning attitude that requires one to take challenges head on, pushing the limits to the point of failure, and a commitment to finishing. I am not going to sugarcoat it. Paul kicked my butt badly a few days a week for a few years. At times, I was in pain and emotionally drained. I failed often and with each stumble and fall Paul would lean into my ear and firmly say “Get up” without doing it for me. Paul superseded beyond a regular personal trainer for me to being somewhat of a life coach. Regrettably, due to family matters and schedule changes, I had to cease my workouts with Paul. However, not a day goes by do I not wish to get back in the gym with Paul because I never felt better about myself in many many years. Physically, I felt much younger and my quality of life was far better.

So, if you are serious about making a commitment to achieving your personal goals with the aid of a top of the line personal trainer, I highly recommend Sand and Steel Fitness.
